NeoGen PSR in Katonah, NY: A Different Way to Rejuvenate Your Skin

There are a lot of technologies that promise younger-looking skin. What I like about NeoGen PSR is that it works by encouraging the skin to actually rebuild itself.

NeoGen PSR stands for Plasma Skin Regeneration. It uses medical-grade nitrogen gas that is converted into plasma and delivered to the skin in very short, controlled pulses.

It isn't a laser. It isn't radiofrequency, and it isn't a plasma pen.

The nitrogen plasma transfers energy into the tissue beneath the surface of the skin. That controlled thermal effect starts a cellular response that stimulates fibroblasts—the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin.

And that's really the reason we use NeoGen at Form & Function.

We're not simply trying to make the surface of the skin look smoother for a while. We're trying to get the skin to make more of the things it gradually loses as we age.

What Happens to Our Skin as We Age?

Most people think about skin aging in terms of wrinkles, but wrinkles are only part of the story.

Over time, we lose collagen and elastin. The skin becomes thinner and less resilient. It doesn't bounce back the way it used to. We begin to see crepiness, laxity, changes in texture, lines around the mouth and eyes, and the cumulative effects of years of sun exposure.

Hormonal changes can accelerate some of this, particularly for women during and after menopause.

So when I evaluate someone's skin, I'm not just looking at individual wrinkles. I'm looking at the quality of the skin itself.

That's where NeoGen can be particularly useful.

How Does NeoGen PSR Work?

NeoGen uses nitrogen plasma energy.

Inside the device, medical-grade nitrogen gas is converted into an energized plasma state. When that plasma reaches the skin, its energy is transferred very rapidly into the tissue.

One of the interesting things about NeoGen is what happens next.

The epidermis initially remains in place and acts almost like a natural protective covering while changes are taking place underneath it. The controlled thermal effect in the deeper tissue sets off the skin's natural healing and remodeling response.

Fibroblasts become activated. New collagen is produced. Elastin and the supporting structure of the skin begin to remodel.

This doesn't happen overnight.

The treatment starts the process, but your own skin does the rebuilding over the weeks and months that follow.

Why Collagen and Elastin Matter

Collagen gives skin much of its strength and structure. Elastin helps it stretch and then return to its original shape.

We need both.

As collagen declines, skin becomes thinner and less firm. As elastin changes, we lose some of that snap and resilience we associate with younger skin.

This is why I think simply calling NeoGen a “resurfacing treatment” doesn't tell the whole story.

Yes, we can see improvements at the surface. But what interests me more is the regenerative response taking place underneath the surface.

What Do We Use NeoGen For?

We use NeoGen PSR for a number of concerns, including fine lines and wrinkles, crepey skin, skin laxity, sun damage, uneven texture and overall loss of skin quality.

I particularly like it for the skin around the eyes.

The eyelids and surrounding skin are thin and delicate, and they often show aging earlier than other parts of the face. NeoGen gives us a way to work with this area without relying on a laser or adding volume.

It can also be useful for lines around the mouth, areas of facial laxity and skin that simply doesn't look or feel as healthy as it once did.

NeoGen Isn't a Plasma Pen

This is worth mentioning because the terminology can be confusing.

When people hear the word “plasma,” they sometimes assume NeoGen is a plasma pen or fibroblast pen.

It isn't.

NeoGen uses medical-grade nitrogen gas that is converted into plasma inside the device. That plasma transfers controlled energy into the skin.

We are not creating individual little dots on the skin with a pen. We are treating an area of tissue and using nitrogen plasma energy to initiate a regenerative response beneath the epidermis.

The mechanism is very different.

NeoGen Isn't a Laser Either

Lasers use light at specific wavelengths. NeoGen doesn't use light.

That doesn't mean one technology is universally better than the other. They simply work differently.

We have several skin technologies at Form & Function because different problems call for different solutions.

Sometimes I want the nitrogen plasma effect of NeoGen. Sometimes RF microneedling makes more sense. Sometimes a laser is the better choice. And sometimes we combine treatments because we're trying to accomplish more than one thing.

I don't think every patient should be treated with the same device.

What Is a NeoGen Treatment Like?

The treatment itself is customized according to your skin and what we're trying to accomplish.

That's another thing I like about NeoGen: we can adjust the energy.

Some patients want a lighter treatment with relatively little disruption to their schedule. Others have more significant sun damage, laxity or wrinkles and are willing to have more downtime in exchange for a stronger treatment.

There isn't one standard NeoGen treatment that I use for everybody.

With a more intensive treatment, you should expect redness, warmth and swelling. The skin may darken or take on a bronzed appearance before it begins to shed. Lighter treatments have considerably less recovery.

We'll talk about all of that beforehand. I don't like surprises after an aesthetic procedure.

When Will I See a Difference?

You may notice changes as the skin heals, but I tell patients not to think of NeoGen as an instant-results treatment.

The interesting part happens over time.

Collagen production and tissue remodeling continue after the procedure, so the skin can keep improving for several months.

Patients may notice smoother texture, softer lines, firmer skin and an overall improvement in the way their skin looks and feels.

Of course, everyone responds differently. Your age, skin quality, sun exposure, health and the intensity of the treatment all matter.

How Many NeoGen Treatments Will I Need?

That depends on your skin.

Some patients may do very well with a more intensive treatment. Others prefer a series of lighter treatments with less downtime.

There are also patients for whom I wouldn't choose NeoGen at all.

That's why we start with a consultation rather than deciding on a treatment before I've looked at your skin.

Can NeoGen Be Combined With Other Treatments?

Absolutely, and this is where having different technologies available becomes helpful.

NeoGen is very good at addressing skin quality and collagen and elastin remodeling, but facial aging doesn't occur in just one layer.

For example, if someone also has changes in the muscular support of the face, we might discuss EMFACE.

If there is significant textural change or acne scarring, EXION RF Microneedling may have a role.

If we're looking for non-invasive radiofrequency tightening, EXION Face gives us another option.

The point isn't to use as many technologies as possible. Quite the opposite.

It's to figure out what we're trying to change and then choose the technology that makes sense for that particular tissue.
